New CCTV system for Ninewells to help enforce no smoking law

A new CCTV and Public Address installation at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee will help ensure the safety of staff and visitors and play a vital role in enforcing the no-smoking law in public places.

The role of the new installation, which was carried out under a tight timescale by Tayside-based Scottish Communications, is to monitor and manage the Ninewells entrance and recently completed Bus Stance area.

A total of 16 cameras are installed linked-back to a high-resolution digital recording system in the main reception area. The majority of the cameras are high definition, vandal resistant domes. To complement and work in tandem with the CCTV is a Public Address system, enabling announcements to be continually played enforcing the new no smoking regulations. Announcements can also be made in response to specific situations when required.

The cameras also enhance public safety by monitoring the approaches to and from the car park and bus stop areas.

Brian Main, Head of Support Services at Ninewells, said: “The new CCTV installation is something that we are pleased to see in place as it gives the added benefit of a more secure environment in the bus stance areas for staff, visitors and patients, provides additional secure coverage of the staff cycle parking area and assists us to effectively implement and monitor the new smoking controls that have been introduced. The CCTV equipment has been combined with the existing internal systems”.

Brian Davidson of Scottish Communications said: “We had a number of discussions with Ninewells management with regard to the design and implementation of the system. The works had to be carried out in a relatively short period of time as the client wished to have the system operational before the new legislation came into force.

“I believe Ninewells now has a system which gives them the level of control and management they are looking for.”
