Constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, a unique component of the £20m building is its 1,200 seat auditorium that can be used not just as a concert hall, but also for a multitude of other uses ranging from boxing ring to fashion catwalks, motor show, party conference or dinner dance.
However, a key factor during the construction process was ensuring the security of the building site. This was achieved by the installation of a CCTV system from Scottish Communications to cover the perimeter and approaches into the construction site area, along with intruder alarms covering the main site stores and offices.
An Alarm Receiving Centre monitored both the CCTV and intruder systems. If an alarm were activated live pictures were viewed by control room staff allowing them to establish weather key holders should be contacted.
The system worked well and during the construction process there were no notable incidents of vandalism, theft or site intrusion.
Gavin Caird, project surveyor for Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, said: “The camera system was deployed around the perimeter of the construction site and worked well for us in deterring and detecting potential problems.
“Thanks to the installation, we had no significant instances of theft and vandalism and we found it to be more cost effective than having an onsite security guard”.
Brian Davidson of Scottish Communications said: “Maintaining adequate security at a construction site is a perennial problem for builders and CCTV provides an effective and viable alternative to using manned guarding. We worked closely together to ensure a well laid out detection and surveillance system. This coupled with good lighting and perimeter fencing proved to be an effective security control. The client was also able to monitor the site during the day, which proved to be a good management tool.”
